What exactly is a Search Engine?

A search engine is a piece of software that helps individuals find online information by using phrases known as keywords. Search engines can deliver results rapidly, even when there are millions of websites available since they continuously monitor the Internet and index every page they locate.

Top Search Engine

Google

Google is the first biggest search engine for desktop users today. Larry Page and Sergey Brin were the founders of Google. Google headquarters is in mountain view, California, United State.

It is a global technology firm described as the “top large company in the world” and one of the world’s most valuable brands. Google indexes billions of online pages to allow users to search for information using keywords and operators.

The specialties of Google are technology, internet advertising, cloud computing, computer software, scientific computing, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, electronic goods, and many more. It has market domination in data collecting and technological advantages in the field of AI.

Yahoo!

It is placed as the third largest engine with an average of 1% market share.

It is the default search engine for firefox browsers in the US. Yahoo is a very popular portal and its ranks the 9th most visited website on the Internet.

They have some specialized searches like food. Its interface greets you with everything you need. Its result provides the trending to the biggest news stories weather forecast etc. yahoo homepage is cluttered with ads. It also sells user data to a third party like google.

Bing

It is in fourth place, averaging between 2.83%  and 12.13%. Bing was renamed Microsoft in October 2020.  This is the alternative search engine to google.

Because of the low search engine market share, it is the default search engine on Windows PCs. According to Wikipedia, it is the #26 most visited website on the internet.

DuckDuckGo

It is in the fifth place with a market share of 0.66%. they are serving 90+ million searches per day according to the traffic stats. DuckDuckGo does not have a search index of its own like they don’t have its data. They depend on other sources to provide data. Duck Duck Go has a clean interface, it does not track users.

Yandex

It is the root of two Russian developers’ projects. Yandex has less traffic because of the smaller engines, but organically and in paid search, its competition is meager.

Yandex algorithms are less sophisticated than google, thus easier to assess and optimize.
