Kung Fu Panda 4 has been discussed since the release of Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2016, but now a release date has been revealed – here’s all we know so far about DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 4. While the franchise centered on Po (Jack Black) and his fellow Kung Fu Masters and pals have grown in the years after Kung Fu Panda 3’s debut, a new Kung Fu Panda film has yet to be officially confirmed. Kung Fu Panda 4 now has a release date, and it will be the first feature picture in the famous franchise to be distributed by Universal since Universal’s takeover of DreamWorks in 2016.

Po has come a long way since Kung Fu Panda in 2008. Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 solidified Po’s role as the Dragon Warrior, allowing him to hone his skills as a teacher and guardian of the Valley of Peace. TV spinoffs highlighting Po’s escapades with the Fast Five, occasionally focusing fully on them, expanded the franchise. While the Kung Fu Panda TV episodes and shorts were very useful for world-building, the feature films tended to focus on the improvement of Po’s powers and his personal story, making a new Kung Fu Panda picture more intriguing when considering Po’s journey. The Latest Kung Fu Panda 4 News
DreamWorks Animation just confirmed that six episodes are in the works (via Empire). Many anticipated that, despite unsolved issues, Kung Fu Panda 3 would be the final installment in the franchise, but the plot has evidently always been part of a six-part plan, according to DreamWorks Animation chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg. Katzenberg talked about his intentions for major DreamWorks films including Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar.
According to Katzenberg, all of DreamWorks’ big franchise films are pre-planned, and the plot direction of each edition is known before the animation process begins. In terms of Kung Fu Panda, the DreamWorks Animation president stated, “Kung Fu Panda really has six chapters, which we’ve laid out over the years.”
Kung Fu Panda 4 Release Date
Although the Kung Fu Panda series has continued to grow through TV programs, DreamWorks Animation’s announcement that Kung Fu Panda4 was in the works was surprising. Despite the success of the Kung Fu Panda feature pictures at the box office, there was little expectation of a fourth movie (via Box Office Mojo). Nevertheless, with the confirmation, everything changed. Kung Fu Panda4 will be released on March 8, 2024, according to Universal.
Cast
While nothing is known about Kung Fu Panda4 other than its release date, Jack Black is expected to reprise his role as Po, as he did in all of the series’s feature films, as well as most franchise short films, the 2010 Christmas special, and Netflix’s 2022 Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight. Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Crane (David Cross), Viper (Lucy Liu), Monkey (Jackie Chan), and Mantis (Seth Rogen) from The Furious Five will very certainly return, as they were almost as important as Jack Black Po in Kung Fu Panda 1–3.
Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) and Po’s father, Mr. Ping, are also present (James Hong). Po’s biological father, Li Shan, may possibly appear, though it’s uncertain if he’ll be voiced by Fred Tatasciore or Bryan Cranston at this point. There’s also the mystery of who will voice the villain in Kung Fu Panda 4 – and who the villain is. With Ian McShane’s Tai Lung, Gary Oldman’s Shen, and JK Simmons’ Kai, whoever takes on the role of the evil guy in Kung Fu Panda 4 has some large shoes to fill.
Story
While it’s very certain that Kung Fu Panda4 will have Po engaging in more animated Bruce Lee-style kung fu escapades, no specifics regarding the narrative have been revealed. Yet, Kung Fu Panda2 concentrated on Po’s background and how deeply it impacted him in a way that prevented Po from finding inner peace, but Kung Fu Panda3 allowed Po to grasp the understanding and usage of chi, making Po’s growth as an individual and a Kung Fu Master important. Kung Fu Panda4 will most likely continue Po’s journey as a Kung Fu Master and Dragon Warrior, making the next Kung Fu Panda film extremely intriguing, given the TV episodes progressed Po’s plot significantly, but their canon status is unclear.

While there is anticipation for the forthcoming Kung Fu Panda film, no Kung Fu Panda4 teaser has been released. The first trailers for 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3 were released in mid-to-late 2015, thus if Kung Fu Panda4 follows suit, the first teaser will most likely be released in summer 2023 at the earliest, but more realistically around autumn or winter. The entertainment environment in 2023 is considerably different from what it was in 2015/2016. With the introduction of streaming increasing competition in movie promotion and viral marketing, dropping the first Kung Fu Panda 4 teaser in the year of release is also a realistic tactic.
